ALCOHOL AND YOUR
BRAIN HEALTH.
Most people know that heavy drinking can harm our bodies. But did you
know it can increase your risk of dementia?
In fact, research shows that people who regularly drink more than 21 units of
alcohol a week are more likely to develop dementia than those who stay within
the UK’s recommended limit of 14 units.
It’s why being mindful of how much you drink isn’t just important for your overall
health. It’s one of the simplest ways to look after your brain, too.
HOW MANY UNITS ARE IN AN ALCOHOLIC DRINK?
y Small glass of wine (125ml, 12%) → about 1.5 units.
y Single measure of spirits (25ml, 40%) → 1 unit.
y Pint of lager or cider (4-5%) → about 2–2.5 units.
FINDING THE RIGHT BALANCE.
The key to a healthier relationship with alcohol
is moderation. Small changes can make a big
difference:
y Downsize your glass – switch a large glass of
wine for a medium.
y Alternate your drinks – have water or an alcohol-free option between
alcoholic ones.
y Take days off – give your body a break with at least two alcohol-free
days a week.
y You don’t have to go it alone – join in with campaigns like Dry
January, or with friends and family who are also cutting back.
