A RECORD £30.8M
INVESTMENT IN
DEMENTIA RESEARCH.
With your help, Alzheimer’s Research UK has invested a record £30.8 million
into dementia research in the last year – including £6.7 million for brand new
research projects, which add even further power in our search for a cure.
That means scientists across the UK have been able to begin an additional
55 new studies – that could further transform how dementia is diagnosed,
treated and prevented.
And from new insights in the lab to long-term studies that will follow people’s
brain health over decades, these projects cover the full journey of discovery,
building the knowledge we need to change the future for our loved ones.
We’ve never had a year like it. This record investment
shows just how much momentum dementia science has
right now. And it’s thanks to our supporters that we can
back brilliant scientists with bold new ideas.

THE PROGRESS YOU’RE MAKING POSSIBLE IN 2026
y New drug targets. At the University of Bristol, Dr Scott Miners and his team
are studying how damage to the brain’s blood vessels and protective barrier
may drive Alzheimer’s disease and how existing drugs could help prevent this.
y Earlier and more accurate diagnosis. At the University of Cambridge, Prof
John O’Brien is testing whether immune cells called neutrophils could help
doctors distinguish between different forms of dementia earlier and give
people access to support and research.
y Understanding dementia risk. At University College London, Dr Sabrina
Kalam is exploring how Lewy body dementia affects people from minority
ethnic groups, by uncovering brain changes that may increase risk. This
ensures research better reflects everyone affected by the disease.
